The government was drawing up plans to convert the industrial park into a services hub as well as creating a data centre to entice private companies, such as those involved in gaming, to set up their operations in Gozo. Investments Minister Austin Gatt praised HSBC chief executive Shawn Wallis personally for believing in Gozo and creating a pro-active centre on the sister island. Managed by Ray Cassar, the new centre is a welcome reprieve for 21 Gozitan employees who were transferred from branches in Malta to their home island, drastically reducing their daily travelling time and providing them with a better quality of life. The new centre will serve as both an outbound call centre for bank employees to contact clients offering personalised packages and services and as a back office to chase late payments, among others. It will have an annual recurring operational cost of €1.2 million (Lm515,160). The building was revamped in 15 weeks with an investment of €800,000 (Lm343,440). An unused factory in Xewkija has been transformed into a high-tech service centre for HSBC, employing 50 full-timers and injecting new life into the industrial park.
